Celebrating 40 Years

Symphonic sounds spring from the Baumann Centre in downtown Victoria every Saturday morning. Sixty to 65 young musicians from early teens to mid-twenties, collaborators committed to their musical craft, make up the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra. Expressive, focused and adventurous, the GVYO is respected as one of the finest youth ensembles in the country.
GVYO players are guided by Music Director Yariv Aloni and a faculty of Victoria’s top musicians, through rehearsals and sectional coaching sessions, where they develop ensemble and performance skills and build lasting friendships. Over the years the GVYO has been further enriched by working with internationally esteemed guest artists such as Sir Yehudi Menuhin, aJonathan Crow, Ben Heppner and Timothy Vernon.
The results are performances of an impressive calibre, and invaluable experience for young people, who mature not only as musicians, but as contributors to their community. For 40 years, the GVYO has enchanted audiences across Vancouver Island and as far afield as the Kootenays, Haida Gwaii and Yukon Territory. GVYO alumni occupy positions in ensembles, orchestras, and academies throughout the world.
Join the GVYO for two Sunday afternoon concerts at The Farquhar at UVic: November 16 and April 19. Program highlights include Brahms Symphony No. 2 and Kodály Dances of Galanta as well as music by Tchaikosvky, Bizet, Glinka and more.
PLUS…The GVYO joins the Victoria Symphony to perform Fauré Requiem and Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony on February 6 and 7 at Christ Church Cathedral.
