Broadway in Victoria has announced the Victoria premiere of HADESTOWN, playing the Royal Theatre from January 12 to 17, 2027. Tickets go on sale in October – but audiences can sign up now at broadwayinvictoria.com to receive their pre-sale invitation next month, ahead of the general public.
Created by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and director Rachel Chavkin (Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812), HADESTOWN won eight 2019 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. It has since become one of the more distinctive musical theatre hits of the last decade, running on Broadway and touring North America and the U.K.
The musical intertwines two mythic love stories: that of the young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of Hades and his wife Persephone. Mitchell’s score, rooted in folk, blues and New Orleans jazz, carries the audience from the world above to the underworld and back, setting industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love.
In telling the story, the classical Greek setting is transported to a space reminiscent of 1930’s Dustbowl America – where desperate people eke out a meager existence and ride the rails seeking out any hint of opportunity.
HADESTOWN’s cultural impact was on full display this summer, when a live-capture film of the Broadway production hit North American movie theatres and became an unexpected box office smash. Released in late July, it opened to more than $10 million domestically, the biggest opening weekend ever for a filmed stage musical, surpassing the previous record held by “Hamilton.” It went on to gross over $20 million in theatres, making it the highest-earning live theatre capture in history – a sign of just how far HADESTOWN’s appeal extends beyond traditional theatregoers.
For Victoria audiences who haven’t seen it, the run at the Royal Theatre offers a chance to catch a show that has been decorated, discussed and toured widely, but hasn’t yet played the Island. Sign up now at broadwayinvictoria.com for early access ahead of October’s public on-sale.
