This season, UVic’s Phoenix Theatre offers audiences a little bit of everything: a witty, celebrated classic, a contemporary coming-of-age story, and a little Broadway razzle-dazzle. See all three shows for only $54!
The season opens with The Cherry Orchard (Nov. 5–14) by Anton Chekhov, translated by Michael Frayn and directed by Carmen Aguirre (Mojada, 2023). Returning from Paris to her beloved family estate, Madame Ranevskaya discovers the property is deeply in debt and at risk of being lost. As an auction looms, her family clings to memory and tradition rather than face an uncertain future. Frayn’s lively translation captures Chekhov’s signature blend of wit, irony, and heartbreak, making this classic feel fresh and accessible.
In February, The Wolves (Feb. 4–13) by Sarah DeLappe, directed by Amanda Lisman, brings a completely different energy to the stage. Jump. Shuffle. Lunge. Repeat! A girls’ indoor soccer team navigates friendship, identity, competition, and growing up. As they stretch and train, conversations shift from school and relationships to bigger questions about the world and what lies ahead. Funny and fast-paced, with rapid-fire dialogue, it offers an engaging portrait of teenage girls finding their voices.
The season wraps up with the Broadway showstopper Curtains (Mar. 4–20), directed and choreographed by Jacques Lemay (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, 2024; The Drowsy Chaperone, 2018). When an onstage murder throws a Broadway-bound show into chaos, everyone becomes a suspect. Featuring music and lyrics by legendary songwriting duo John Kander and Fred Ebb (Cabaret, Chicago) and a book by Rupert Holmes, this musical comedy whodunit is packed with big production numbers, plenty of laughs, and unexpected twists.
